Off the beaten path points of interest.

I miss the road trips of the past, but nothing says I can’t start taking them again if I want to enjoy that mode of travel. In the years before the interstate highways we always enjoyed the sights of small towns along the state highways. So many towns and so many highways to enjoy it’s worth slowing down and revisiting some of the places.

One of my favorites was the Pioneer Village in Minden NE on Hwy 6. Very interesting place stated back in 1953 by Harold Warp. The things they had in there would keep you busy for several days trying to enjoy seeing it all.

A trip off the main interstates provide so much information and points of interests it's time to slow down and relax with places like this.

Anyone else have an interesting spot to visit off the main interstate highway?

Default Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend Iowa

Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend Iowa

Location: State Hwy 15 south of US 18

The Grotto is frequently considered the “Eighth Wonder of the World” and The Iowan magazine has described the Grotto as a “Miracle in Stone.” The location was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 2001 and has been included in such features as Roadside America and Disney’s The Straight Story. A composite of nine separate grottos, each portrays a scene in the life of Christ. The largest man-made Grotto in the world, the Grotto contains the largest collection of precious stones and gems found anywhere in one location!

Highway 101 up the west coast. At the northern end it loops around the Olympic Peninsula in NW Washington.

Nebraska Highway 2 from Grand Island to Thedford then US 83 to Valentine through the Sand Hills is another good one. I also like Nebraska 71 from Kimball to Crawford over the Wildcat Hills and Pine Ridge.

In South Dakota US-16A (Iron Mountain Road) through the Black Hills is an awesome road. I love the split one lane sections through the forest, the one lane tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore, and the pigtail bridges.

I drive marathon routes... ugly at night, pretty during early AM (before traffic). Glad I can run 1200+ miles per fuel fill. Deer strikes can be a problem.

Luv doing nice roads in 18 wheeler.
Clear vision, comfortable, safe...
More time to enjoy!

You won't see much from the interstates. Even if it puts me behind by a couple hours I'll take a detour to get off the interstates, especially out west. When I was a kid my dad would take us on long road trips but his idea was that if you couldn't see something from the car window it wasn't worth seeing. Today I'll stop for just about anything.

Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. Waterfalls!

North Shore Drive along Lake Superior in Minnesota. Stop at Betty's Pies. Split Rock Lighthouse.

Badlands Loop in South Dakota. Try for early morning or toward sunset when it's at its coolest and most beautiful.

Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee. Watch out for people trying to kill themselves on motorcycles! And note the artwork of wrecked motorcycles decorating some trees.

Highway 1 from Miami to Key West. If you can tolerate bumper-to-bumper traffic.
