Ha - I doubt Jkgourmet would wear Sketchers with a tux! But the only thing more casual than sneakers would be Teva sandals so it seems something a bit nicer could also be comfortable.

Chances are you will be walking (a Lot) and in various weather / terrain. and @ different events / outfits / general appearance needs.

Staying 'casual'
I need something more structural than a cloth / rubber / plastic / 100% synthetic matl shoe, and cannot get the support from a Boat type / or Chinese designed shoe.

NO DINGLE BERRIES allowed!!! (salesman / (slimey) shoes!)

Merrell

I have peripheral neuropathy. I only wear these shoes. I waterproof them.

Last year we did a Viking cruise from Amsterdam around Belgium and back to Amsterdam. Walking tours every day. My feet and the pain were a major concern. Halfway through I was asked how my feet were feeling. I had to stop and think about it. They weren't bothering me at all.

Then 17 days driving around the southern half of Ireland. Walking every day. Same result.

I only wear these shoes. All the others sit in the closet and will be given to Goodwill this year.

Sketchers carries more than just sneakers now.

I think "dingle berries" means something different to you than it does to me. Can you please explain further?

I love Chukka boots, and have worn them traveling all over Europe and North Africa.

Ha, you’ll be pegged as a tourist as soon as you get herded along in a group by the lady with a flag on a stick. Or as soon as you open your mouth ordering something. Don't worry about it, be comfortable and enjoy it as much as you can. Your feet will hurt anyway walking all day, just don’t wear white socks.

Whatever you are currently wearing that is comfortable on your feet for long walking distances. I've always found lots of walking in Europe. Its no time to be breaking in a new pair of shoes or to sacrifice comfort so that people admire the shoes you are wearing.

I personally choose either Skechers or Rockports.

I think you will find the footwear of the 'average' European to be identical to the footwear worn in the US, this no trainers thing is a bit of an urban myth. I can only speak for my part of Europe but most streets are NOT cobblestoned (might be different in Eastern Europe I don't know), if you are visiting cities though you will probably find yourself walking a lot so I suggest 'comfortable' is the best advice.
