I'm traveling to Europe soon and was looking to buy train tickets. I read a couple places that you can buy train tickets at a cheaper price if I buy them directly from the operator. Do these operators have websites or do you have to already be in Europe to purchase directly from the operator?

Are you going to many different countries, or mainly travel in just one country? If you are going to spend the majority of time in just 1 or 2 countries, it is more economical to buy a multi-day, weekly or multi-weekly rail pass from each national rail company.

Very much depends: Lots of rules, lots of benefits
#1, MUST be foreigner to buy true Eurail

#2 depends on your routing (which countries) & how often 'on-board' / travel style (class of service).

Last time I used one (decades ago)
1) you HAD to buy BEFORE entering Europe (not available there EXCEPT at USA Military PX / travel store in Europe)
2) You could 'punch in' after 10 PM and ride unlimited until the following midnight. So we loaded up the kids and left at 10:01PM, traveling to the furthest destination overnight, while dark, then backtracking to scenic spots during the day, and sometimes BACK to launching point by midnight (Or within range of a CHEAP inner country fare to get us home).
