time of year?
What do you like to do?
How much money do you want to spend?
Will you have a car?
Will you go specifically during an 'event' weekend?
I vote Quebec City!
Portland (oregon) for August - Oct (if you have a car to drive 1 hr to beach or one hour to mtns / Columbia River Gorge)
Portland Maine for Oct
Followed by Montreal, Charleston, Toronto, then Nashville. I prefer all during the fall season.
Denver I can do without (30 yrs in Colorado, but I avoided Denver most of those yrs)
Chicago, SF, LA, Seattle, NO, and Boston are nice 3 day cities.
DC, I like to spend 5 days (lots of nice biking... have spent up to 2 months visiting there during fall season).
Will rent a car if needed. Late September trip. Not looking to go anywhere during any event weekends. Like to do a mix of nature, museums, historical sights, self exploration (walking different neighborhoods). Also enjoy bars and good food (then again, who doesn't?).
I've done Chicago, LA, SF, NO, DC and Seattle - I live in Boston.
Go to Nashville, and be sure to go to the Bluebird Cafe for great live entertainment. It's a really small venue with great live artists, and it's not all country music. I lived in Nashville for about 5 years many years ago. The Bluebird Cafe was my favorite.

IF you like nature and art, Cheekwood Botanical Gardens is a great place to explore as well.

You can actually see most everything worth seeing in Nashville or Charleston or Portland, ME in 3 days. You need about a week to do justice to Montreal or Toronto, about 4 days for Denver or Portland, OR without side trips.
