When did you do it?

What was your itinerary?

How long did it take you to plan?

How long was the entire trip?

Just looking for ideas. If I can't go to Africa in Feb 2019 for 2 weeks I thought maybe doing a RTW. However, I'm also not sure I can do one in 2 weeks But I still might be interested in doing such a trip at some point so I'd love to hear from those who have done this.

In the late 80's one of my co/workers did a 16? week RTW trip with his wife, a "Trip of a Lifetime"

They had been planning it for 2? years.

He did a short (45min) presentation over lunch when they got back.

They indeed went around the world, with lots of really weird backtracking for connecting flights.

No thanks. I love to travel but three weeks is my maximum. Best of luck to you on your trip though.

Yeah, I did it in 2016. Flew first one way to Manila, with a side trip to Brunei and back. Then a really cheap one way to Qatar. From there another side trip to Ethiopia, and back to Dubai. Then a one-way home. Without the side trips, the three added together one-ways were less than $1,000, Manila to Gulf to Home. Side trips added maybe $300.

Booking today for April, youi can do ORD-BKK ($328) BKK-DEL ($152) DEL-ORD ($515), just under $1,000 total.

OP means on a RTW ticket, right? Not just planning a trip where you happen to circle once around the world?

I have not done this but I imagine I probably will some day. If I do it will take me at least 6 months. Definitely have no intention of rushing something like that lol.

In 1994 my Air National Guard unit was tasked with providing famine relief to the survivors of the Rwanda massacre. Our routing was Anchorage - Keflavik, Iceland - Sigonella, Italy - Entebbe, Uganda. We spent the next 29 days flying relief supplies to the refugee camps in what was then Zaire. Coming home we kept going east. Our departure routing was Entebbe - Diego Garcia, BIOT - Utapao, Thailand - Kadena AFB Okinawa, Japan - Yokota Air Base, Japan - Anchorage. It was to be my only round the world trip.

At Entebbe one of our airplanes was parked in front of the old control tower where Israeli forces engaged in a firefight with the PFLP terrorists that had hijacked Air France 139. I got to go up in the tower and saw where some of the bullets had impacted. Our other plane was parked in front of the old terminal where the hostages were kept. I was not able to go in there as it was filled with squatters.

I've done several, and while I'm temporarily housebound (bad knees pending replacement) I imagine I'll resume my RTW travel sometime in the next year or two.

You can fly around the world in as few as three long flights, so it's not like it HAS to be some giant adventure, and if you want to limit your stops and the time you spend in them, you can do it in something like 48 hours. Obviously that's not what most people want, but it IS feasible.

I use round-the-world tickets sold by airlines in the major alliances, in my case the Oneworld alliance (American, British, Qantas, Cathay Pacific etc.) I've used them to travel to places that I always wanted to visit, and because of their flexibility I've also used them for personal and business travel around the US. The alliance tickets are good for up to a year and include up to 16 flight segments.

Here's an example of one trip I made - starting in Sweden, visited Spain, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, then traveled around the US including visits to family in Alaska, then more friends and family in the UK and Israel before ending back in Sweden. On other trips I've visited Asia and South America.

I did a longish thread on the basics of RTW tickets over on TripAdvisor. Some of the numbers are a bit dated, but the basics are still okay. Link - https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopi...ir_Travel.html
