in Phyli we stayed at the crown paza which is in the business distric so its a few miles out of the center city, and we paid about $109--that was a couple of years ago though. but very nice hotel

The tradeoff with Amtrak is, you have to follow their schedule instead of your own. However, if you are on an express, you might actually get from NYC to Philly or Philly to DC in better time than driving. There are regular Clocker trains that go from NYC to Philly. Just remember...unlike trains in Europe, Amtrak does not always run on time.

Philly does have a good public transit system, and you can get day passes to use on subway or bus. They also have a good regional rail system that stops at 30th St. Station, Center City (15th & Market) and Market East (near Independence Hall). You could also look into S. Jersey - the Patco Line runs into Center City, and is quick and affordable.

For NYC, you have many options, both in the boroughs (Queens/Brooklyn) or over in NJ. If you are in Jersey City or Hoboken, there is the PATH that takes you into Manhattan.

In DC, I stayed by the National Zoo (think it was a Sheraton) and it was right by the subway station, so we had no problems getting in and out.

NYC-Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island trip is worthwhile and when downtown I'd suggest the Museum of the American Indian in the old US Customs building at Bowling Green. I haven't seen an events schedule yet but you'll be inthe city at the height of the River to River Festival. I'd suggest googling their site and keep checking 'til the schedule's posted. Usually some very good music, dance, art events at various locations and for the most part free.

The youngest three might really like Sesame Place Sesame Place in Langhorne. It's maybe 35 minutes outside of the city. My kids loved it!

The American History Museum at the Smithsonian is closed for refurbishment until fall. If that is a highlight for your DC stop you might want to rethink. We were planning on going in July but have pushed our trip back to Oct because that museum is #1 on our list of things to see.

That's a shame, great place!

Perhaps the Air & Space Museum would serve as a worthy substitute? Anyone I know who's ever been has enjoyed it.

Gotta go to the North End, Boston's Little Italy, and where lots of Italians still call home. Also enjoy some great baked goods at Mike's Pastries or Modern. Good luck.

Thanks all. The trip is shaping up. I am inclined to do the Amtrak pass since after all the parking, fuel and tolls, the cost would be 3k plus. I was able to find Westin 4 stars in the heart of each city or within two blocks of the Metros for an average of 125 bucks. Not bad.

So Ducks in every City? or just one or two? Which?



What's to eat in Washington? Boston... I ate a Legal twenty years ago and hear bad things now.
