Hey all, who has ever heard of or been at a hotel/motel that still required a cash deposit even though you paid the actual room (or intended) with a credit card or something with a Visa logo on it?
Seems to me it’s a way to pocket the cash by coming up with lame excuses to keep the cash and you have no way to dispute it. Plus instead of checking out by just leaving you have to stop at the front desk and maybe waiting in line if the clerk is tied up.
I've been at a couple of places that required a key deposit, back when they had keys. I forgot once, and I still have the key to the hostel in Odessa, but there was no deposit..
In China a former colleague and I encountered a situation where a hotel required a cash deposit. I don't know if wasn't due to the fact we were foreigners or it was a normal thing there.

If you overstay the gift card has a limited value; a credit card usually has at least a $5000 or $10,000 line of credit. Also it's somewhat of an indicia of credit and responsibility, even though I have an ample number of cards, and a bankruptcy-level FICO score of 832...
