I agree that this is a prevailing attitude. But I just strongly disagree with this prevailing wisdom. A normal person needs a vacation, needs a change in scenery for at least a week or preferably more at least once a year. For some people this might involve travel, for some people maybe it involves sitting home and watching movies and getting drunk in a neighborhood bar, etc... But I think a vacation is extremely important for the person's mental health and happiness. If more Americans took longer vacation than maybe they would be taking less harmful and useless anti depressants.

One of my friends recently asked me this and I didn't like it. I replied that I always budget for trips before I go somewhere, which is true, and I do with less of other things to afford it. I don't travel abroad - all our vacations are within the US. But we do it often.

She and her husband have more income than we do but they have considerably higher bills.
