In September and October 2019 I plan to drive from the UK to Kenya. This is so I can go to the equator, near Nairobi. I have an electric car so I'm going to drive from the UK to Germany to hire a petrol/diesel car and then from Germany to Kenya. The trip will take about 3 weeks driving from Germany to Kenya, 1 week there and then 3 weeks driving back. I know that the weather is delightful there at that time of year, about 24C and sunny so not too hot. Anyway, any thoughts?

Please post pictures with a narrative of your trip. It should be fun and interesting.

Sounds real cool on paper but off the top of my head I can see two pretty big hurdles:

(1) getting visas that will allow you to cross all these countries. Regardless of the route, you are likely to get into some tough countries or borders to go through (Syria or Lybia + South Sudan, Western Sahara/Mauritania, and so on).

(2) getting your German car rental company to allow you to take the car to Kenya. I doubt your UK insurer would allow you to go there if it were your own car, imagine a rental.. given that Italian car rental agencies typically won't even allow you to go into Bosnia with that car, imagine South Sudan...

(3) Keeping your electric car charged when you drive from the UK to Germany. Are there really enough publicly available charging stations?

You will need just not a visa for yourself in many cases but also detailed paperwork to import and export your car into specific countries. As far as renting goes, many German rental agencies ban driving even into the Czech Republic with their cars, much less leaving the continent with them.

I've actually heard of people buying cheap used SUVs or compact pick-up trucks in Europe with the intention of driving down to Africa and selling them down there for decent profit, so I'm not saying to give up on your dream. But what you want to do is far more technical than you realize and you need to find the specialist groups who have done it before- they're got to be out there somewhere- to give you a realistic blueprint with the highest chances for a happy and successful trip.

There are some pretty dangerous countries to go through on the way...

BUT:
No problem with charging the electric car between the UK and Germany,
https://chargemap.com/map

but are there enough available diesel stations in Africa?

it doesn't look like...

perhaps in Kenia, but not on your way there.

Visa seems to be not a problem.

Renting car in Germany - Rental Qualifications and Requirements:
This is for Hertz, but its very much possible that other rental car agencies have the same rules.
Hertz vehicles cannot be driven into and/or dropped off in any African, Asian or Middle-East countries.

Are you comfortable with right-hand traffic?
https://www.worldstandards.eu/cars/l...ing-countries/

and this:
Taking a car across Africa takes quite a bit of planning and is not cheap. For many countries, especially north of Kenya, you need a carnet, or passport for the car which usually involves making a fairly substantial deposit/bank guarantee or insurance policy to cover any customs liabilities. This will depend on where the car itself is registered and where it's going but to give you the worst case scenario we had to provide a bank guarantee to our home motoring association (the RAC in the UK) for 8 times the value of our car (which is UK registered) to be able to temporarily import it into Egypt. You lose this money if you don't/can't export it again so buying a wreck you are happy to write off isn't an option. You have to buy insurance in each country as well as other road and carbon taxes. Fuel can also be very expensive in parts - not far off European prices.

So... how is your planning going so far?
Do you have experiences traveling in Africa or any countries other than Europe?
What do you know about the English speaking population in Africa? What other languages do you speak?
Hint: Pretty much people of all of northern Africa and Francophone Africa don't speak English.

What about renting a hotel room?
Ordering food?
Vaccination requirements?

And a bonus question:
what is your budget for the 7 weeks trip across Africa?

This would be fun! A dear friend hauled their family from UK to Chad in their 1951 Chevy Carryall in the late 1950's
I will have to see if I can dig up their journal.

1951 Chevy Carryall

I sure wouldn't worry about finding Diesel, since that is what most of the world uses (including insurgents driving Toyota HiLux missile launchers... besides... diesels will drink about anything and LOVE it! Jet A, Kerosene, use motor oil, transmission fluid. heating oil, cooking oil, canola, coconut, palm oil... the diesel engine was designed to run on Peanut oil, not dino diesel.
