Merchants Row off Stonington Maine in a sailboat. Itís the most beautiful sailing Iíve ever experienced.

Iím struggling trying to pick my #1 ski area. Rather than a glitzy resort, Iíll go with little Monarch. Old center pole double chairs. Only 1,000 feet of vertical on three separate peaks. Nobody skis there so the ungroomed skiing surface is great. Some fun side country with a short walk. Friendly bar with good food in the base lodge. Aspen is the best town if you want to spend money. Deer Valley is the best pampered service and great tree skiing. Snowbird is the place I want to be on a big powder day with the road closed so I have it to myself.

For a city, itís a tough call. New Orleans, maybe.

Help me to learn to enjoy New Orleans.

We enjoyed an afternoon at the horse races, wandering through the graveyards, and a couple impromptu music places in the evening, and way too many beignets... but one day in N.O. has usually been plenty for us.

Not drinkers, so bars are not necessary, but good food is an OK use of time.

We do enjoy frequent SF stays. The library walking tours / history is great and probably something we should have found in N.O. We did a few walking tours of historical architecture in N.O., but quite honestly, enjoyed the same in Chicago much more.

NOLA is all about hearing music, dancing & eating local food, the local culture is unique in the world. Either you like it or not, it's hard to explain passions.

1. Orlando, FL - Love all of the theme parks. A lot to do away from the parks as well. 45 minutes to the beach.
2. Washington, DC - I'm a history geek. Love of the free stuff to do. Gorgeous city.
3. Charleston, SC - Incredible city, history, terrific food, beaches, awesome people.

Honorable Mention: Blue Ridge Pkwy (NC): Jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Ahhh OK. So I guess it's true, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

ferraris:

No contradiction. Iceland and Hokkaido are the places that I wish to visit repeatedly. But they are not the places that I want to spend the rest of my life (months maybe). But Hawaii is. Every time after leaving the island for an extended period, somehow deep in my mind there is an urge to return.

Oh I just found it funny how someone who lives in a stereotypical "paradise" location vacations in cold locales. I have family who do the same thing...they live near sunny Florida beaches, and then go vacation at Canadian ski resorts.
