Marriott Wardman Park or the Omni Shoreham are my favorites. We lived in Northern VA, but enjoyed weekends in the city for quick getaways. They are kind of tucked away in neighborhoods, vs right downtown.

If staying in NOVA I would recommend any hotel near Crystal City Metro station. There are quite a few.

I've stayed in DC and in Alexandria and there are pros and cons to both. If you are going on a budget, stay in Alexandria/Old Town and just take the metro in. The DC metro is clean and easy to use. If you have the money to spend, stay in DC within walking distance. Be aware that many of the restaurants and things are closed at weird times... we were disappointed that many of the shops near our hotel closed when the workers went home. If you stay near Chinatown, though, there are more food options available.
