Heading to Washington DC in April looking for hotel suggestions. We would of course like to be within walking distance of sights and restaurants. Would one suggest being near public transportation as opposed to being in walking distance of sightseeing.
I'm also going to DC in April. I've been looking at hotels and airbnb as well. I'm leaning towards a Marriott if I go the hotel route. I want to be near a combo of the two - metro and near the sights. Check out my thread in the forum. I got lots of good advice.
We always stay at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn/Key Bridge. It's near the Metro stop making it easy to get to the attractions, its in a nice area and it's reasonable. Never had any issue getting around from there.
Not that long ago, I stayed at a hotel close by the Alexandria-Old Town metro stop. Worked for me, but then again I was primarily visiting attractions in Northern Virginia. Would probably work fine for DC, especially if you’re coming in at Reagan International.

It depends on your budget. There are everything from Econo Lodges to 5-star hotels.

Stayed at the Marriott several times...good location, hotel great as usual.

The Capitol Hilton Hotel. Right across from Lafayette Park which is right across from the White House.
For location/price you can't beat the Hilton Garden Inn - Downtown DC. It's a block and half from the White House, three blocks to the National Mall/Smithsonian Museums and under two blocks from the McPherson Square Metro Station. The neighborhood is very safe and is chock full of excellent restaurant options. The Old Ebbitt Grill is highly recommended and in my opinion the quintessential DC-style restaurant, it's just a bit over two blocks from the hotel. Make a reservation and hold out for a table in the historic front section that's been in operation since the early 1920s complete with working gaslights and a beautiful bar that's served a lot of former presidents and other politicians. It's moderately priced yet feels like a special occasion kind of place, enjoy!
