Your original post references taking the train there and then getting around Vegas by bus. So you've already considered the possibility of not having your car there.

I've driven a dozen beaters on multi-thousand mile road trips, but I had enough money to get myself out of any situation my beater got me into, which a couple of times, meant repairs en route.

So, if you can't tolerate the immediate cost of trip interruption, the risk is in you.,

Just an FYI, but there is no direct train passenger service to Las Vegas. Closest you can get is Kingman, AZ, or you could travel by train to Los Angeles.
