The bolded is the part that bothered me, and the child is still going to be strapped into his car seat for long periods of time, but at least now he has someone to sit next to him and entertain him when he's not sleeping.

I agree. The new plan seems to be less crazy than the old one. But it still not great for a two year old kid to spend that long stuck in a car just because his parents decided that they wanted a vacation and would not fly. What would the kid even eat? Sure, his mom can take some food from home but that would not last for long. After that he would be eating McDonalds Kid's meals?
