I have done photography for a hobby for some 60 years. As such I focus on the fact, eyes preferred.
But recently we took a cruise where there were numbers of photographers taking pix prior to dinner, on deck, before you left the ship at each port and such.
Yet out of all the pix they took, only about 10% of them were in proper focus.
We got to the point where we refused to stand in line to get off the ship or go to dinner so they could take another poor pix.

How do you know that they took poor quality pictures? And why do you care?
Some people stay still, pose and say cheese, others take pictures of people and things in action. I prefer the latter.

Because they saw the photos? Cruise ships all have an area where they display the photos taken by the ship's photographers. Typically they have the photos available a few hours after they were taken.

A lot of people like to buy some of the photos (why else would the cruise ship take them?), so I can see where it would be disappointing if none of the photos turned out.

Why do they even bother these days when everyone does their own selfies?

Like elnina, I didn't realize the OP was talking about the ship's photographers. I thought he was referring to passengers taking photos.

Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to hired ship's photographers.
Most photos were posed for vs. action types with fixed ranges which made it easy for an idiot to get a proper focus even if they had to measure and set the distance on the lens.
Like I said, they were mostly out of focus making them worthless and we quit posing.
And cell phones have crappy plastic for lenses, use them as you wish. I prefer quality optics myself. Then again I want quality photo I can blow up should I want that option.
Had my own color darkroom in the mid 1960s but digital is much better!

Not everyone.

I am proud to say that I have never done a selfie. And never will.

I agree. Whenever possible, I use a camera with a proper lens.

We never stop for those photos by the ship photographers, we just scoot right by. I think any problem with their photos being out of focus would be resolved due to decreased sales.
