I noticed something similar in a Brexit thread. If you don't have problems like those of other people, the problems of those other people aren't real to you.

That's just too broad... United States St. Louis MO or United States Ivins, Utah?

True. In her case, the reference is mostly probably mostly Albany, NY, and where she grew up here in the NY/NJ metro area, as well as other east coast cities. In general, though, she'd likely be referring to urban areas in the US. She's not much for rural places.

As is pointing out that traveling overseas is dangerous is too broad. That's kind of the point.

I felt safer walking around Managua, Nicaragua by myself as a young female @ night than I do walking alone in NYC @ night.

Crime in Managua is far worse than New York City, personally I feel a lot safer in most areas of New York City than Managua.

Living in NYC I feel safer here than in many of the other major, & not so major, cities in the US & the crime stats bear this out. Plus NYC has some of the most friendly people outside of Ireland. And I have been to Manila a couple of times & while I love the people I kept looking over my shoulder in random walks around streets & constantly checking my pockets in packed jeepneys.

I remember when the "metro area" around Ivins Utah, et al., was a sleepy & inexpensive Mormon backwater known for cheap honeymoons & retirees. Now undeveloped small tracts of land for a potential house are going for $300K+ close to the bluffs.
