Eh. Some tourist areas have a fair amount of sketchiness right outside the popular areas (or even within it: see Waikiki). Other tourist areas have very little sketchiness within 100 miles.

Seems to me you are looking for "exclusive". Based on your claims that Disney is too expensive (granted it is if a perfectly fake world and standing in line isn't your thing) you are looking for champagne on a beer budget. And if you think St Augustine doesn't have sketchy you didn't look hard enough.

will be driving cross country - plan to go through tennessee and stop in Memphis and Nashville - any areas to avoid? I mean in terms of crime as will be driving/delivering a newer car

(I just know that Disney can cost an arm and a leg these days..............we try to keep out trips to under 5k).

The absolute truth. I can't understand why everyone runs to the Caribbean than complains and whines when bad things happen. I guess visiting there is some kind of a status symbol.
