I have no fear of going to vacation places that are sketchy around the edges....I have been to quite a few. I would just like our next trip to be totally free of all that. I'm looking for eastern US or Caribbean.

Examples of places that were sketchy in certain areas: Daytona Beach, Oahu, Dominican Republic, Washington DC, Phoenix, Jacksonville, Miami, Mobile, Savannah, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, and I think Barbados (although I can't really remember it too well).

A few places that had no sketchiness were Tybee Island, Key Largo, Alligator Point, and Sedona. Possibly Lake Powell too, although we weren't there for long.

I have no interest in Orlando. Most of the islands are automatic rule outs (Google Earth is great). I could go back to someplace we've already been but would prefer to try something new. It can't be super-exclusive because we're not rich.

Any ideas? (And does any one else also get tired of going places that have sketchy areas just outside the touristy areas....or maybe even mixed in with them?)

What is it that makes a place “sketchy”? crime rate and safety?

I always do some research on where the bad parts of a city are before I go. This info is usually easy to find.

That being said, it’s unusual for tourist attractions to be located in sketchy parts of town. Exceptions such as the Watts Towers in LA or the Poe House in Baltimore are infrequently encountered.

Most small towns in coastal Maine or in Vermont would probably qualify. Possibly small Massachusetts towns like Deerfield or Northampton or Williamstown or Stockbridge. Cooperstown NY or Lake George maybe. National parks or other popular hiking spots perhaps.

Almost any town of under 15-20,000 north of a line Chicago to Denver. Unless there has been some unusual economic activity that would attract migrant labor.

Fly-over country violates quite a few negative stereotypes. Ought to go look at it sometime.

lol..........not really looking for Nirvana. (Sedona, for example, wasn't exactly my cup of tea, for various reasons. But at least there's no real sketchiness there or in Oak Creek. Or at least I haven't found it, after spending a couple weeks there in the last few years.) Key Largo didn't really have that "small town" thing going on. But again, no real sketchy parts.

Just looking for a decent, reasonably-priced place where the kids can have some fun, and sketchiness is taken out of the equation.
