Since you're so concerned about fuel economy and wasting time driving around, consider stopping at the exit and call the area hotels and inquire about vacancy then you won't have to "drive around the entire town looking for hotels".

Time to install a couple of hotel apps on your phone. Then you won't need to drive around looking for a place to stay.

We sometimes would pop in without a reservation back on a road trip in 2005.

In 2005.

C'mon it's easier than ever to book a room online. You can do it from your phone without even calling!
Not to mention it's incredibly easy to use Google Maps to see time/distance. Even if you don't have anything planned you can at least get a pretty good idea of how far you might make it.

The kid sounds young, impulsive, and disorganized. I wonder if he expects there to be a gas station whenever and wherever he gets down to the last gallon?

I'm guessing the discount coupons he wants to use don't work for online reservations

Successful hotel chains do that,IF there's a market. They do such boring things as research, study demographics and do thorough business plans before spending millions of dollars.

The reason that highways and small towns tend to have motels or small hotels is the demand is simply not there to justify larger places.

The main point is, hotels are not a public utility, there to serve the traveling public. They are a business, there to maximize profits. As c charlie said, they research it quite a bit.

This thread reminds me of my late MIL, who used to complain that they ("they") should build separate roads for trucks.

However, some hotels routinely overbook their reservations, knowing that a certain number of people will never show. Sometimes, you can get shut out, even with a reservation.

Nope, especially on road trips I fuel up whenever the tank gets close to the halfway point.

BTW I find your post offensive.
