I'm retired and often visited family and picked up digs from a breeder in Arizona while living in houston. It's a long two day trip but that works for me. Las Cruces NM is good stop going to AZ. Lots of nicenew motels in Las Cruces I deduced must be for peak crowds for college events like football games.

Pulled in one mid week late afternoon and could not find a room as I had no reservation not expecting a crowd midweek in the middle of March.

Finally asked . NASA staff was in town for a high tech secret weapon test in White sands just north. Also learned US 70 would be closed most of the next day. Go figure!

Any time they do missile testing at White Sands Missile Range, they shut down US 70, just in case of a catastrophic failure.

Not necessarily an unusual cause.

Cities sell out all the time for reasons you would not think of: sporting events, city wide conferences, festivals, storm events, etc.

You should always make a reservation to keep from being stranded.

We got the LAST room in Terre Haute IN because a nearby prison was having a training conference. ALWAYS reserve your room!

Back in the 90s my then-girlfriend and I drove to Chicago for a summer weekend. No real plans just go partying and have fun.

Obviously we weren't soccer fans, since didn't know Chicago was having World Cup. We drove until we found a room, which was basically in Milwaukee.
