I usually travel with a pair of cowboy boots in the checked baggage, and they do double-duty as bottle holders. I wrap the bottles (usually not wine, but local liquor or a special local fruit syrup) in socks (clean!) and stick them into the boots. And then I bag the boots in sturdy plastic bags and close them up carefully, in case there is a spill. That has worked for me for years.
We brought wine on a cruise--our waiter stored it for us and served it each night with dinner. Saved money and got to enjoy good wine instead of just overpriced stuff.
We fly with wine quite often (usually bringing it home though) and have never had a break. Wrap it in plastic (2 layers, preferably something like a ziploc that seals) and put it in the middle of the checked bag with clothing on all sides.
I've done this several times. Like others have said, pack it well. I just double bag it with zip lock bags, then wrap sweaters all over it to prevent breakage and leakage.
I know friends who have had the bottle break. I wouldn't do it.
