I used to think this until I got one of these off brand rental places on a trip to Miami when I booked through hotwire "hotrate", or whatever they call it. They ended up charging me with their bogus insurance despite my telling them not to, and the car I got was covered in dings and dents, I mean really covered, they refused to give me anything else. The most interesting thing about the car was whoever worked there used drywall screws to crudely attach the license plate to the trunk,
like they drilled the drywall screws directly into the metal of the trunk. I'd never seen anything like it.
iirc the company was called e-z rentacar, they whole thing felt like it was run by the mob or something. Since then I only use the bigger companies like enterprise or hertz, even though they try to scam you too if you get a scummy person working at the desk, at least they're a little more legitimate.
