Hello! Wasn't sure which forum.. Well, we have a place in N.CA and we have a condo in N.GA. Driving across the US a couple of times, we have used the middle route (I-40) and we have used the Southern route (I-10/20). Late May 2019, we would like to start from N.CA along HWY.80 to begin crossing the US to N.GA. On this trip, we want to stop along the way to see very interesting sights - that are definite must sees in a lifetime. We enjoy monuments, beautiful nature, and historical places. Now, looking at the map going from N.CA thru Reno on 80, we will visit a friend in Salt Lake City, but we aren't sure what to see after that (beginning along Hwy. 80 then destined for N.GA).

Some possibilities are (starting on HWY.80 from N.CA):

1) Veer up from Cheyenne to see Mount Rushmore and vicinity, 90 to 29, dropping down to Kansas City/St. Louis/Nashville/Chattanooga thru to N.GA.
2) Continue on 80, 29, dropping down to Kansas City/St. Louis/Nashville/Chattanooga thru to N.GA.
3) 80, drop down to Denver, and continue across on 70, to Kansas City/St. Louis/Nashville/Chattanooga thru to N.GA.

Two seniors on a road trip for a week or so! From your experience, what are the must see sights along the way and what interesting route would you advise, beginning in N.CA and to reach our destination just North of Atlanta GA?

After all those trips, it's time to go and see America. Get off the interstates. The interstates you haven't seen look exactly like the ones you have. Pick any exit with an Ihop and Comfort Inn. All the same, even from the parking lot, you can't guess even what time zone you are in.

Go through Eureka NV, Gunnison CO, Norton KS, Eldorado AR.

I agree. The interstate highway system is efficient and looks nice.

However, you must get off of it to actually see America.

Yea - I've done similar trips many times. I see almost nothing from the interstate.

Think about it OP - interstates are designed to quickly whisk you around tourist attractions and good scenery.

You also get better MPG at 60 mph. Maybe quite a bit better depending on what you drive.
