Buying a car out of state from a guy's driveway and flying there and bringing it back cross country for a mini vacation road trip. To make a very long story short, I will need to be bringing a license plate from another one of my cars to attach to the new car. Yeah, yeah, I know...
Anyway, license plates are metal and I wonder what TSA will say if I stick it in my carry-on.
Thoughts?

Just give yourself 10-15 minutes extra at the airport in case it blocks what the scanner can see and they want to hAve a manual look in the bag if you’re carrying it on

I had one in my carry on last year and it was no issue at all.

I've had odd metal things in my carry-on and TSA just wants me to take them out and show them. I've got an antique cigarette case that always baffles them and they want me to take it out to show it. I've started just taking it out of my purse and setting it in the tray before it goes through the X-ray machine to save time.

Or, if OP is worried the plate could be over-nighted to his hotel.

This is actually a really good tip. Any time you're traveling with something that you think has the potential to raise eyebrows, go ahead and take it out of your bag and place it in a bin. That will help reduce the chances that they'll need to go through the bag.
