This is why I always have a tenant who can feed the dog, save the mail etc.

I don't believe the P.O. will hold mail longer than 30 days. We go away every year from our 3 places; two of them are always vacant for months, so we use a mail receiving service for our mail.

Unplug the appliances and electronics that you're leaving. If you are not on the first floor of your apt. building, no need to worry about timer lights, etc. If you have your own water heater and don't see any controls (and it's electric), turn it off at the circuit breaker. We also turn off our stove so no one can come in and accidentally turn on a burner. Set the thermostat at 80 for A/C and don't worry about heating. Your apartment won't mind a 55 degree climate inside, which is probably about as cold as it would get, we've found.

Some of the items will depend on which place we lived in at the time, but I'll just answer for our current home, which we haven't yet traveled away from long term but will this summer.

1) Temperature will be set to something like 82 or 84. It really just depends on how I feel. However when we leave next month we will have a smart thermostat controlled remotely so it won't really matter too much.

2) Water shut off sounds like a good idea, but in our case we will have a temporary tenant staying in the house about 10 days each month so we'll need to leave it on. But on the positive side, obviously, the tenant will at least be able to see if there's an issue while she's here.

3) I might add a security camera or two but not sure if it's necessary. We have them at some of our other properties which are now rentals. Here we are in a gated community, and it's not a joke like some of the gated communities we have lived in the past. The security is fairly vigilant and the neighbors are all on top of each other (very tight townhomes) so someone would certainly notice if something were to happen.

4) We have family that lives <10 minutes away. They already check on other family members who are away for half of the year, so I guess we can ask them to stop by our place once or twice.

5) Mail - USPS will only place a 30-day hold. You will have to figure out something else if you need to hold longer than that. We'll just have the tenant collect in when she is in town. The mail is in a locked mailbox cluster so not a big deal if we collect it every once in awhile only.

One can place another 30 day hold after the first one expires but that means you will get the mail delivered for at least a day or 2.

Yep and have a way for someone to collect the accumulated mail.

Look into mail receiving services. You can google them. It's a good option for people who will be away for long periods. We've been using one for years.
