Hi again,

Have you ever travelled somewhere but missed key attractions? If so then did you feel disappointed after?

We recently spent a lot of money/time travelling to Montreal and had a great time. We went up Mount Royal, walked around downtown, went to the casino, the village, explored a few random neighborhoods and overall got a nice feel for the city. Took some great photos too.

However, I realized that we missed Old Montreal and the Underground City once we got home and I feel pretty disappointed since these are among the most popular and highly-rated attractions there. I know that I cant change the past and that there's always tomorrow but I really really wish that I allocated some time to see those things.

I fully blame myself since I didn't do more research before visiting. For some reason, I was hesitant to heavily research the city since I felt that it wouldn't be as surprising or exotic if I was already familiar with it.

What are your stories?

(I know this is my 2nd thread within a short timeframe so sorry if I appear 'spammy'.)

Yes, I missed seeing the Trevi Fountain on my visit to Rome because it was undergoing repairs and was hidden behind draperies. I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to see it, and if I ever get back to Rome I'll definitely have it on my "must-see" list for that trip, but I don't think that the trip was worse for missing it. Any large city is going to have more attractions than you'll probably have the chance to enjoy. (Which makes me remember: I also missed Schönbrunn Palace when I visited Vienna. So much to see, so little time to see it all!)

We missed touring the Vatican the first time we went to Rome, due to having to handle a minor emergency. Instead, we ended up wandering around a part of Rome we didn't know much about and discovering some things that ended up becoming special memories.

At the time I was bummed about missing out on seeing the Vatican treasures, so the next time we went to Rome, we made a point of going on the tour.

Turns out the Vatican was ok, but didn't really live up to the hype (IMO). On the other hand, the part of town we discovered on our own that day was much more interesting to us. Plus I think we had the best gelato in all of Rome on that day, too.

On a similar note, when I found out we were moving to DC area, I made a list of things I wanted to do my first year. One of them was to attend a few embassy parties, LOL. I think I had seen too many movies where attending an embassy party was a glamorous thing. Also, I really wanted to do the Easter Egg roll.

Year after year I meant to do these things but somehow neither one seemed to happen. Something else would be going on the same day or I'd forget or yadda yadda yadda. Took me about ten years to make it to the Easter Egg roll. And after all that, I wish I hadn't bothered, LOL. What a waste of time, looks great on tv but really isn't that exciting in person. The embassy party I finally got around to attending was much the same. It was ok but after you have the fun of parading around in your fancy clothes for the first 30 minutes, it's a bore.

We only have so much time and have to prioritize. I wish I had skipped the Sistine Chapel and toured the Vatican basilica but couldn't do both. I was sick one day in Cusco Peru and missed visiting Sacsayhuaman and couldn't fit it back in. Now I have to go back. I will probably get back to Rome and I want to go back to Peru. I've decided that I can't visit everywhere so I have to prioritize and go with it.

I went to India and didn't visit the Taj Mahal. But I read and researched about it ahead of time and didn't think it was worth my time. Everyone said it was a must see but I don't have any interest in it.

Hasn’t occurred very often to me because I do a lot of research before traveling, but has happened a couple times:

Rome: Galleria Borghese was closed for renovation.

New Orleans: had set up a plantation tour of Houmas House, Destrehan, and San Francisco. Didn’t happen because not enough people signed up for it.

San Francisco: Asian Art Museum and De Young Art Museum were both closed for earthquake retrofitting.

Los Angeles: Pacific Asia Art Museum was closed for earthquake retrofitting. Fortunately, highlights of the collection were on display at the USC main library.

Memphis: two BBQ eateries, Payne’s and Charlie Vergo’s Rendezvous, were seasonally closed.

Have been lucky enough to return a second time to Paris. Didn’t get to several attractions the first time I went because there was just too much to see (Cluny and Rodin Museums, parks like Luxembourg Gardens and Parc Monceau), but saw everything else on a second visit.

My parents didn't wake me up when we went through part of Redwood National Park. That was our infamous trip from hell as we call it. We drove down the West Coast for vacation and drove was all we did. We barely got out of the car.

I missed going to the Victoria Falls although I was nearby at a safari lodge close to the northeastern Botswana border (with Zambia). Due to the timing it simply didn't work out.
