i think mine was back in 2011 in Greece for £800 for a week for 4 of us.
Africa self-drive tour for 3 weeks. Total for flights, food, truck, permits was around $12,000. It was worth it. I am 68 and won't be doing many more of these. Oh, I flew business class to/from Africa.
It wouldn't surprise me if most people who have done safaris in Africa would list that as their most expensive vacation.
Overall, I'd agree with you. But in my case it wasn't.
We were already doing a long Africa trip on the cheap. and just rented a car and a tent in Nairobi and did it self-guided, fitting it into our flexible budget. I don't know if you can still do that, and park fees were a lot less in those days.

An executive at my last company went with her husband on a safari where he was permitted to shoot carefully-chosen big game: a giraffe, a zebra and others. It was all legal and I suppose they selected old animals to kill. The natives cleaned the carcasses and the pelts and heads were sent home to be displayed as trophies. It really rubbed me the wrong way. I can't imagine what that trip cost.
And.. on the subject of expensive trips I'll never take: luxury cruise to Antarctica on Ponant. 10,000 Euros per person, double-occupancy and excluding airfare to and from Argentina. I haven't looked up the single supplement.
We took our kids to Florida for the first time a few years ago. Wanted to give them a great trip, and we had never really stayed anywhere fancy, so we stayed at Trump International in Sunny Isles Beach (just north of Miami) for four nights, then the Hilton Key Largo for three nights. Sunny Isles was $375 a night and Key Largo was $300 (plus tax). Fantastic places, and we also did a bunch of fun activities in the area, like Jungle Island in Miami.
It was a great trip, but I must say that I’ve gotten better at finding hotel deals since then.
Good lord. Where did you stay? How many people went with you?
That was for flights, tickets, meals, etc. for six. We booked two rooms (including a suite) in the Ali'i Tower at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Much of it was the premium for travel during Christmas week... we've stayed at luxury hotels like the Four Seasons, the Waldorf Astoria and the Ritz Carlton in cities like NYC and LA for less. We've also booked tickets from LAX-LHR for less than those LAX-HNL tickets cost. We went in expecting that traveling during that time would be pricey, and we were not disappointed.

Thanks! Definitely makes sense. I was hoping it would be for multiple people and not just for one or two
A week in France at a nice hotel, with rental car, then a week in Corfu, Greece at a very nice resort with rental car. The most expensive part of the trip was the double airfare for 2. We had to pay for the flight from home town US to Paris and back, then within this trip we paid for a second set of tickets from Paris to Corfu and back.
I think we spent about $10,000 for the two weeks. Ouch!
