If you go to the American airlines website and read all the travel info thoroughly, I'm sure you'll find your answer. If it's not listed directly on the site, they always have customer service emails/nos. and you can ask your question there.
I have done this on International flights. It counts as a piece of luggage. It was easy then. You can buy an expensive bag and pretend you are Lance Armstrong or you can bum a box off the local bike shop. You take off the front wheel and the peddles, loosen the stem to take off the handlebars. Make sure you are under the weight limit (I stuff other things into the box to bring it up to maximum) and tape it up, I have not done it for three years and new weight and baggage limits have been adopted since so you must check with your airline.
How are you intending to get your bike to your destination after you arrive?

I am going to Honolulu and I can ride it too my sister's apartment.
I'd check out how much it would cost to rent a bike there--just in case the airlines charge and arm and a leg to ship it! (They're getting pretty tight on what you can carry on a plane, nowadays!)
