Definitely experience the trolley from Ghiradelli Square, the tour of Alcatraz, Chinatown, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf. There is so much to do out there and it can be done in 3 days. If you have a car, I agree with Grace C, take the ride down to Monterey along the Pacific Coast Hiway 1 and the 17 mile ride thru Pebble Beach, talk about a beautiful ride. Also, you have to drive down Lomard Street, just to say you did!

Make sure you bring a sweater or jacket, it gets chilly during the evening. Have fun!

i've been there many times on business but only once on vacation - love the city

we found the CityWalks cards to be great - they are pocket sized cards that have neighborhood walks and highlights mapped out on them - got to see so much stuff that we normally would of missed

for alcatraz get your tickets in advance or you may be disapointed that it's sold out

we stayed at two different spots - the first was the Hotel Del Sol (nice funky budget inn) which is over by the marina area/cow hollow - just S of Union Street - we were able to easily walk to the warf, shops on union street, some funky neighborhoods and an easy bus to the Fillmore area

then we switched to nob hill for the mark hopkins (a little more fancy, but fun) - great for union square, chinatown, north beach

the neighborhoods make the city so special - i'm sure you'll have a blast

The Commodore hotel or pan pacific hotel - Stanford Court hotel is nice as well. The Clift House is fun. Presidio and Palace of fine arts. The Haight is good shopping as is union square with bloomingdales. Pac Bell park even if there is no more pac bell. Mission Dolores. Coit Tower. Fog city diner. Red and White Ferry- Blue and Gold Ferry.
