Screw my friends. I'd go anyway.
That'd be like telling Europeans not to travel to the US because we invaded Iraq or our economy is the root of the current world food crisis.
China is actually on my short list of top worldwide destinations I'd like to visit if ever given the opportunity.
Traveling itself does not make a political statement, unless you (or your friends) choose to make it a political statement.
