Wow, old topic.

So we did the trip and it was great! We spent just under 90 days in the Schengen zone thanks to about 10 days in Switzerland (back then, now I think it is part of the Schengen zone) which allowed us in on Schengen visas, but didn't count toward time. Weird situation.

In the end, it didn't SEEM to matter because nobody SEEMED to care when we left. We didn't get asked any questions about the Swiss stamps (which we forced the border guards to give us) so maybe it would've been a problem if we hadn't stuck to the timeline, maybe it would have been fine.

We used a totally made-up itinerary to get the Schengen visas (you needed to submit proof of hotel bookings, so I booked online 30 days in Paris, 30 in Berlin, and 30 in Rome then canceled them after I got the visas) and just played it by ear once we actually were in the EU, only planning a few days ahead.

This was 2008. Have no idea how it is now. Europe is totally fun for backpacking, but really expensive. SE Asia is much cheaper but rougher.
