DH and I have been talking about this, too. DH said he saw something on TV - maybe CNN - that said people who have to make trips under 500 miles are now driving instead of flying. At least, a majority of people polled said they would drive rather than fly. I have to agree. We are going to be driving. Not that driving is a bargain anymore, either, but w/ all the luggage restrictions, plus charges for luggage, well . . . just not interested in going thru/ the hassle.
We used to LOVE to fly!!! In the 80s and 90s . . . any excuse for a trip, LOL, business or pleasure. I remember on one flight, we got a cheapie on New Year's Eve . . . and there were very few people . . . and we had brought a bottle of champagne. So we told our FA and she brought out wine, and b/n our bottle and the wine, we all had a toast. Plus, they had bumped us up to First Class. So many times, we got bumped to First Class . . . free drinks . . . everyone sooo nice. Now days - more like a cattle call and the poor FA, they might as well be busing tables . . . and passengers packed in to the gills . . . crowded and miserable . . . UUGGGHH.
I had not heard about weighing people in - "pay by the pound" - ROFL!!! But I had heard that USAir is under severe financial strain b/c of leased equipment . . . and that they may not make it thru/ this crisis. Don't know if that is true, either.
I also had missed that 1700 people were being laid off. That is awful and I am very sad to hear it.

If they DO start charging by the pound, I will never fly again. As it is I have to buy three seats.....
Baggage charges. The last one was a fuel surcharge. As expensive as flights are anyway, now I have to chip in for gas....
I always wonder why the seat is so much more expensive closer to the flight date. It's the same seat, and with the "same day" price as high as it is, that seat will likely be empty anyway....
That rumor comes from a series of ads placed in the Philadelphia Inquirer last week for a company called Derrie-Aire, which was offering a rate per pound for passenger and luggage. It's not real though, it was placed in the paper as a way to track ad responses.

The bottom line is that it costs a lot of money for planes to fly. They generally discount their rates the earlier you buy - first as a way to offer a good deal, and, second as a way to guarantee future revenue. The closer you get to a flight date, the closer you are getting to a more realistic price for your seat.
$15 for each bag checked is nothing. People want to pay next to nothing and want to keep their jobs too. Businesses need to make money. Unforunately to make money to keep employees its gotta cost someone. Tacking on some extra fee's for extra baggage is fine with me. Heck, I think they should stop giving out snacks and drinks on the plane unless you pay for it.
Now high flight costs I don't agree with, but the surcharges for other things I am good with. Call me crazy...lol

I don't mind paying for QUALITY service. My husband REFUSES to fly USAir and I'm right there with him because of the way they treated us on more than one occassion. The words "customer service" don't seem to be ANY part of their vocabulary.
Being in a business that gets hit w/ fuel prices going up and the added costs of doing business I do understand the increases. But the extra "fees" to try and make up the difference I do NOT agree with. Just put it down as one price and build in all of the costs of doing business instead of having 5-20 extra "fees". Instead they show one "low cost" but by the time you "finalize" the deal the fees doubled the price.
BTW, I thought airlines were trying to get people to CHECK their bags instead of carrying them on. These extra "fees" are only going to force more and more people to try and carry on their bags vs checking them.
