Bermuda is my favorite, but it is rather expensive and winter isn't beach weather. The good thing is it's a short direct flight from Newark Airport. It's also a very safe island that's yours to explore.

By the time you book the shore excursions, and add in the "extras" the real cost of cruise can add up too. That said, the above RC cruise looks like a good one. If you haven't been there honeyryder, you might want to visit the cruisecritic bulletin board. Royal Caribbean is a great cruise line.

Not Alka but yes she is correct about Jamaica.it's one of the first things they tell you & stress to you at Sandals Resorts...do not wander around off the complex ...they have shuttles to take you to town escorted
Hubbies golf, the greens were patrolled around the perimiter with armed, all though the weapons were covered, guards

Bermuda Cruises out of NY are relatively cheap and you get a couple of days there. Have time to explore and sleep & eat on the ship..best way in my opinion to see Bermuda if your budget is tight

I just don't get the appeal of visiting an island if you aren't going to interact with the people that live there. If Jamacia is indeed unsafe, I don't think we'll visit but I'm not convinced that it's that bad. A couple of people have suggested places to stay on the island and it's certainly talked about as a place to visit (and not just the AI spots) so I'm going to think on this a bit longer. It just sounds so much more interesting then Puerto Rico, my #2 choice.

We were in Jamaica last year (one of the stops on the cruise),I had booked an excursion thru an independent vendor (got references on cruisecritic.com), did the speed boat, snorkeling ,laughing falls etc .The Jamaican guys who took us even told us not to wonder off too far from the shopping area. and a few weeks before our cruise, there was a group of people who took the ships excursion on a bus ,were rubbed with guns. And there are more stories that i have read that you would not hear on CNN.
We usually like to do stuff on our own at all the islands we have been on the cruise and Jamaica will not be a place that we would feel safe.
We have been to Tortola,St.Marteen,St.Thomas,San Juan,Barbados,St.Lucia,Antigua,Cozumel,Cayman Islands and there were a lot of tourists every where and somehow we felt more secure. I have not heard anything bad when i did my research about those Islands ether.

The Bermuda cruises are usually 7 days. Because all of your meals are on ship, you will save money. We found that Bermuda restaurants could be expensive. Bermuda is very clean, relatively safe, and it is very easy to get around. Households can only have one car and there are no car rental agencies, but their transportation system is the best. There are buses and ferries, and if you buy a transportation pass, it is good for both. People are very friendly. Another nice thing about docking at any of the ports in Bermuda, you can take public transportation to anywhere in Bermuda. So, if the ship sails from Hamilton to the Royal Dockyards, you can easily catch up with the ship.

If you are looking for an easy place to drive, Aruba or St. Maarten both drive on the same side of the road that we do here. St. Maarten has one major road around the island, and you have both Dutch and French cultures. St. Maarten/St. Martin is considered the gourmet capital of the Caribbean. Keep in mind that on the French side, euros are the currency and right now it can be pricey. Both Aruba and SXM have many beaches, but SXM also has a clothing optional beach at Orient Bay. The surf there is similar to east coast beaches.

St.Maarten/St.Martin is a great island with fantastic shopping opportunities in both Phillpsburg and Marigot, scrumptious dining in Grand Case, and wonderful beaches all around the island. It also has the very large plus of being a relatively safe place to wander around in.

The only fly in the ointment I can see from the point of view of the original poster is affordability. Food, accomodation and entertainment for 2 people in SXM for 7 days would quite likely surpass the $2000 budget limit.

I have been to Guadeloupe, on many occasions while living in Dominica (right next door) .
I'd recommend both . Note that Dominica is not your typical white sand beach destination, it's very green. One one the safest and cleanest places . Fortunately it's underated !

I've been to St. Thomas & St. John. Loved St. John and would go back in a heart beat. St. Thomas is great if you like the opportunity to shop, but I just love the laid back vibe of St. John.

I haven't personally been to Jamaica but several of my family members have. They said they wouldn't go back...something about being approached by guys peddling assorted pharmaceuticals on the beach. I've had friends however, that really enjoyed their trips to Jamaica.

I've always wanted to visit Bermuda.
