Just want to check with all you experts out there - if traveling by car into and out of Canada, do you need a passport? As I see read it on the web, only if flying but it has been confusing with all the changes. I will be going from Raleigh to Niagra Falls to Michigan - but will have to pass through a small portion of Canada. I will have my kids - I have a valid passport and NC drivers lic but theirs expired last year(but I have their birth certificates)..

thanks for any help!

Getting in to Canada is usually easy - need photo ID and proof of citizenship (passport, even expired, or US birth certificate) for all of you. It's getting back in to the US that keeps changing!!

As for the US regulation, if your kids are <19, you should be fine to take your passport and the children's expired passports and birth certificates:

Getting into Canada is a breeze, coming back is the pain in the arse. If you have a passport, why NOT take it and be certain, as for the kids, I THINK birth certificates are all that is needed for right now, but check first with customs.

If one parent only is travelling with children, Canada and the U.S. both will require a signed, dated, probably notarized (can be done at any bank branch) document from the other parent allowing the travelling parent to transport the children. To prevent kidnapping.
