I would guess I-90 is your best bet.

I moved from Texas to Spokane WA just about July 1, 2003. My route went through Sturgis, and as it just so happened, and unbeknownst to me, the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally was in town. Bad idea.

There were no rooms anywhere. Thousands of bikers descend on Sturgis for the rally and it's a small town. There I was with kids and cats and a carload of stuff and after driving for 10 hours there was absolutely no place to stay.

Look out for this.

212 is a two lane highway with pretty much nothing on it. Just stay on I90 and you'll be fine. It is a divided highway all the way through and more gas stops. Lots of deer on 212.

If you take 212 from Belle Fourche to Billings you will save about an hour and a half from your trip. I recommend 212. I live in Rapid City and that's how I always get to Montana.
