We are going to FLorida in mid August and I cannot believe the rental prices. 300.00 for an economy car??? We are going for 5 nights 6 days.
I am sure it contributes to high fuel costs but this is absurd! Any of the big companies start out at almost 300.00 for a crappy economy car!
I remember the days of renting a mustang for about 12.00 a day lol..and getting a free upgrade!!

If you are renting 6 days, you might be better off to ask about a weekly rate. We have saved money by taking the car an extra day and getting the weekly rate. These have been through Enterprise Rentals.
Woah that seems WAY overpriced... I used to think Priceline didn't really work, but i gave it another try recently, because I had to rent cars in Chicago, Indiana, California, and then twice in Indiana again, so I was pretty desperate to get some lower prices. So I checked priceline, and it said something about discounts being up to 60%. I then calculated 60% of the lowest price elsewhere, and offer that. If I remember correctly, all the cars I got were between $13 and $17 per day. That's an economy car of course, but I frequently got free upgrades on that too (presumably because a lot of companies don't actually have a lot of economy cars in stock, not sure really). Last time we were in Orlando was last december, and I think I paid around $17 a day there, little higher than some other places.
Give that a try, or look elsewhere online, but DEF don't pay that much!
Some places are a lot higher than others. Another tactic in addition to those already suggested is look for a rental agency off the airport. Usually the highest rental prices are at the airport (convenience).
I travel a lot and have seen that much for a week's rental. But I've also paid a lot less. Some areas are just really high and you are stuck.
Check also with your credit card company. I use American Express and the discounts are similar to the search engines like Travelocity, Expedia, etc. Some companies give you 'travel insurance' coverage, too.
If you can take a shuttle to an off-site rental, you'll lower the price significantly. Try Enterprise. They sometimes will pick you up or deliver a car to your hotel. Take the hotel shuttle from the airport and then either cab or have Enterprise bring you your car. Savings can be up to half. Done it this way many times from Florida airports because of high airport access fees.
