just became the legitimate card-carrying aarp member in the spring. we saved $10 on a hotel room on our way to florida. so far, that was all we tried to use it for. you can go to the aarp website and check it out. they list things there.
i also did use it for savings to florida while with a pet, and a discount on a car.
Stores also do give a discount with the card- I do think Busch Gardens also does, and lots of hotels. They also send you a neat newsletter.
I enjoyed reading what they sent my mother-the magazine-why I did join.
I've only ever gotten hotel discounts, normally 10%, but you can get the same discount just by asking at the desk "Do you have a senior rate?" When I turned 50 they mailed me a temporary card to use until they received my fee and send me a regular card. I never joined, and I'm still using that temporary card, just flash it at the desk, nobody looks at it.
Can anyone who is an AARP member who has used the membership for travel discounts tell me what type of discounts you have received? Thanks!!
The discount that has been most useful to me is the 20% off at Wyndham properties that includes a good number of the economy hotels - Super 8, Microtel, and Days Inn.
There are some admissions savings but they are generally no better than the AAA rate.
Just a suggestion: the funds that AARP collects are used for political lobbying, so, perhaps, check to see what their politics are before sending money.
If you agree, it's all good. If you don't agree, there are other ways to get discounts.

Yep. That's exactly why we get equal or better discounts using our AAA card, USAA membership or, most frequently, Costco (nearly unbeatable car rental rates).
I'm a member of both AAA and AARP. They offer similar discount benefits in terms of hotel and car rental, also museums and attractions as well ... although from my experience the AARP discounts are a little better because that proves you're a senior.
The one benefit you do not get with AAA is the free donut with your AARP card at Dunkin' Donuts with your large coffee.
