My husband and I are looking to move towards the Chesapeake area and would love to find a laid back area...or is there such a thing?

Something safe considering we have a two year old and a 3 month old..

thanks!

Do you mean the Chesapeake, VA area or the Chesapeake Bay area?

I lived during my formative teenage years in Centreville Maryland which is just east of the bay bridge. It's a cute little town with ok schools, not a lot of crime and it's close to DC, Annapolis and Baltimore, as well as the beaches. I loved it there!!

I live in Baltimore now, but we vacation each summer in Chincoteague. If there were job opportunities for us, we'd move there in a heartbeat. It's a total change from other beach resorts (kind of a step back in time about 30 years.) We go there during hte summer, but we've also spent weekends there in fall, winter and spring. All seasons are great.

Good luck with the move!

There is an area of Maryland called "Southern Maryland" which is in the Chespeake Bay, between the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers. The "Pax River" Navy base is there, not much else--which is why I think it is laid back. If you are a boater, you would love it there. It is very pretty and peaceful, but it is isolated. The nearest mall (which is not even a very good mall) is 45 minutes away. Annapolis is at least 1 hr away, but is a fun place to go. DC and Baltimore are both about 90 minutes away.

Some of the towns in this area are: Lexington Park, Leonardtown, California, Solomons, Lusby. The housing costs more than the national average, but is not as bad as CA or NY.

Shady Side, and other communities just south of Annapolis. Also St. Michaels area. Not sure about the schools, but life is peaceful.

There's an area called Hickory in the Chesapeake area. It's near the NC border, but close to Norfolk activities. When you drive through, it may strike you as a nice place to live.
