i would skip the car and take amtrak to ny. obviously more trains from dc, so if you live in nova go to union station. if not there are lots of other stations in va. when i go to ny, i stay with family, so not sure on hotels. i would definately recomend staying near metro north, lir, or njt, or nyc subway trains. So much more convienant, plus no paying to park. if you are only going for a short trip, i would splurge and stay in manhattan. it is magical. btw, when you get to penn station (if you take amtrak up), you have connections to njt and lir trains and nyc subway. to get to metro north, take a short cab ride to grand central. have fun, go to a yankees game (last season at yankee stadium).

I would definitely stay away from the buses from Chinatown. They may be cheap but unsafe. I've seen so many of their buses break down going up to Boston or Atlantic City. If you decide to stay in NYC, don't forget you'll also need to pay for parking. Their are many hotels by Newark Airport with transportations out to NYC.
