Is the US Memorial Day weekend an impossibly busy time for air travel? And best avoided?

Just trying to plan our trip to Canada & the US next year and the best itinerary I can come up with has us flying NYC to San Diego on that weekend - either Saturday or Sunday. I reckon I should book a flight for Sunday morning out of JFK versus the Saturday, hoping it won't be as busy. Or am I dreaming?

Do flights get booked up early for that weekend? Are airports a nightmare with lots of delays?

i wasnt sure what to answer because i dont remember if labor day is as bad as memorial day. i am going to venture that it IS more calm on labor day because most colleges have started by this time and depending on the state, some lower schools have started by that time.
however, i grew up in NJ, and labor day was always a time when everyone had one last "holiday" before school started and there was lots of traveling going on.
