Cities that are not tourism magnets can be more interesting (Canada, places)

My wife like to fly to cities all over America on long weekends and spend the weekend looking around. We both in our fifties and have traveled to all the tourist capitals many times and are now interested in visiting places with few tourists. It is amazing how much there is to see in about any place in America.

I loved places like: Tulsa, Little Rock, Kansas City, Detroit, Cleveland, Atlanta and Minneapolis. We kept really busy and loved talking to the people, eating at local restaurants, shopping downtown, looking at the neighborhoods, etc. We got a good feel about the human experience in these regular towns.

Would anyone else do a long weekend in a town not known for tourism? What would you see?

Oregon Transplant, I'll definitely second that! I love seeing places off the beaten path. When I drove long haul and my wife rode with me, we got to see some really neat places. Sometimes it was only stopping the truck for a quick visit. Sometimes we were able to lay over and REALLY see the area. On thop of that, we have friends scattered all over the country, so lodging was/is easier to find. (Stashing the truck can be problematic, though...) (I'll especially agree with you on Tulsa and Minneapolis)

I tend to like the small towns instead of cities...
St Mary's Georgia was a pleasant surprise.
Fayetteville, NC has a great downtown and museums.

I highly agree, you dont have to worry about crowds or too many people in a line waiting for something. Ive been to places like Checotah OK, Lawton OK, South Bend IND, Albany WI, Madison WI, among many other smaller, less traveled places, and absolutely fell in love with the lifestyles of those places. Not that the bigger places arent good, but Ive enjoyed the ones too, with less tourists. Im hoping to go back to Canada and spend some more time up in Calgary one day.
