You can always skip a leg, but everything after that leg will be cancelled. If it's the last leg on the way home, that's fine because they have nothing to cancel. If you skip anything on the way there, it will be cancelled.

what if you check in online, and don't go on the first flight? does this fool the computer?

NOPE! They will KNOW you did not check in at the gate when they scan boarding passes. If you have checked in they will make sure you did NOT also check any baggage and if you DID they will remove such before the plane can take off costing COSTLY delays.
