Once you make the switch to carry-on, you'll never want to go back, even if they ever lift all these added charges.
The convenience and freedom of the backpack is hard to give up. No more waiting at that stupid luggage carousel.
My backpack converts into a suitcase (the straps can be tucked in.)
I always bring a lot of black and beige interchangeables, in silks and/or cottons. I also have a reversible sundress. Just two pairs of shoes.
In cold weather, I wear layers. Wearing outfits over again is not that big a deal, it's not like the same people are seeing you.
If traveling for more than two weeks, I usually do drop-off laundry service once during the trip. As my household's launderer, I consider it a deserved part of the vacation (and it really never costs all that much.)

I'm a light traveler and it sounds as though you have everything you need you listed. I'd just go with that! You can definitely buy toiletries down there.

I did a backpack as a carry-on for a month long trip to Morocco and did a small carry-on on wheels suitcase for a week trip to Berlin (winter time), only do a carry-on to Haiti for mission trips (both suitcases are for the team supplies).
no checked luggage is the ONLY way to go

you know it's very sad that it has come to this. Very sad. Friggen airlines! I hope you have a great time though!!

I figure a couple pairs of jeans, three or four shirts, underwear/socks, one dress in case I go out, and my swimming suit. Anything else I should easily be able to pick up down there, and spend less than I would if I paid $25-50/bag for several flights down and back. I figure I'll buy all my toiletries down there too. One carry-on size bag, and my laptop bag, that will be it.

Any tips?

United is the only airline to not have a very low weight restriction for carry on luggage on the USA-Australia route. Qantas and Air NZ both have very low restrictions of 15 lbs which means you can essentially bring a backpack.

I went to Australia with my family of five for two weeks and we managed to do carry on luggage with United. We didn't check a single thing! If a family with a teenage daughter can do it, anyone can We brought enough clothes to last four-five days and then did washes.
