Planning a trip here in December with some friends. We're going to do a bunch of diving and such, and just have a good time. Anyone else been there recently? Should we rent a car, or just use taxis? We do want to see the island itself while we're there too, not just the water.

We visited Roatan as a port of call during a cruise a couple of years ago. My husband was going to dive but it was too rainy. There's a zipline that I wanted to do but it was also too rainy to do that. Roatan Jungle Canopy Tours on Zip Lines - Bay Islands, Honduras I will say that of all of the ports that we visited, this one made me feel a little uneasy, probably because it wasn't cute and funky but more just poor and I felt badly for the people there. My perception might have been changed if the weather had been nicer.

Roatan was a port of call stop for a cruise I took in July. It rained on and off but we still managed to hit the beach for a couple of hours. I think it's a lovely island and the people we met were very nice. It is growing and changing though. Our driver told us the real estate market is really hopping as more people visit and decide to buy there. Hopefully it will manage to retain it's charm while allowing it's citizens to benefit from this growth.
There were a lot of little children on the beach selling trinkets so be prepared for that. Women offering massages as well. I didn't feel unsafe at any time though. We hired a driver to take us to the beach because of the time restrictions but if we were going for more time I would look into a car rental because like you I would love to see the entire island. Btw, most everyone there speaks English as well as Spanish.
I think everyone in our group loved Roatan and I'm looking forward to spending some time there in the future.

Excellent, thank you! We are visiting for about a week or so this December, and we are going to go out of our way to eat at local establishments and shop local shops rather than the tourist ones. The only thing I am NOT looking forward to is getting the vaccines and paying for the malaria tablets :P
