I need some advice. I can spend $3260 for our February vacation. This includes air and lodging at an all inclusive resort for 6 nights. The arriving flight gets us there at 1:30 p.m. so we have a good amount of time at our destination on our first day.

OR

I can spend $2546 for the same trip, applying my American Airlines miles, however the departing flight from Chicago includes 1 connection in Dallas. Mind you, Chicago in February may mean snow or ice which may make us late getting to Dallas. Also, the flight from Dallas does not arrive to our final destination until 8:00 p.m so the entire day is spent traveling.

However, the cost is $700 less. This is our "big" vacation for the year. We can afford the $700, but saving is saving and it's tempting to save the $700.

I can't decide if the $700 is worth losing an entire day and risking missing the connection in Dallas?

What are your thoughts?

One thing you might consider trying is this: Phone the airline and ask what their policy is to change a reservation once made. Some airlines will charge you a fee to change..perhaps $70-100 per ticket. I would ask the reservationist if you would be allowed to change your "free" ticket to the flights you actually want by paying the change fee. Possibly you cant, but its worth asking.

Use the airline miles if you can, because 1.) You don't say where you are going but I would suspect that the $700 savings exceeds the average cost of the ticket, 2.) Airlines are continuing to devalue the price of a frequent flyer point, and 3.) If you don't travel much, they may take away your accrued ff points after a year or two.

Wheather and cancelled flights are a non-issue, since you get that same risk with your inclusive ticket. If canceled due to weather the airlines will put you on a later flight at no charge, the same as with your inclusive ticket. The fact that it is not none stop puts a little more risk in it however.

Your only real issue is losing a half a day of your vacation to travel.

Well we made a decision today. We're going to use the miles as credit towards an American Airline package. This way, we get something for the miles, we get direct flight and we get to our destination at 1:30 p.m. versus 7:30 p.m. The hotel is all inclusive and pricey so at least by getting to the hotel from the airport by 3:30, we can have some snacks, drinks, dinner and more drinks and take advantage of the money we spent for the day's lodging and amenities. Even though it costs $700 more this way, we get to spend half of the day at the resort and don't have to worry about missing a connecting flight.
