I would highly recommend Croatia a beautiful country and great food and friendly people. (They will be on the euro soon if not already, I think) While in Croatia hop over to Slovenia, I loved Ljubljana and the Lake region. Turkey is very budget friendly and beautiful. Although it is a huge country, to travel by mini bus is cheap, but airfare is high there.
I would love to go to Macedonia and Albania, I hear the coast is beautiful. I heard mixed opinions about Romania, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia. Someday I will go back to Southeast Asia and travel to Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
When planning your air travel consider trying to fly a "Star Alliance" airline, they are the largest alliance and just about have the "world" covered. Travellers - Star Alliance You can rack up tons of points and get free miles. Maybe consider and around the world ticket then you can add other flights as you go.
Ahh I am so ready to travel again!!!!

Thank you for the advice.
We looked at various around the world airline deals, but with all the strings attached and regulations, we think we would like to keep things as open as possible.
I did not know the hostels sometimes offer a room for two and private bath. That's good to know.

I'd suggest going to a bookstore (like Borders) and spend a couple of hours in an easy chair with a random copy of either a Lonely Plant or a Footprint travel guide book. Doesn't matter what country, just pick one you might be interested in. Just page through it and read whatever catches your eye.
These are the guidebooks for the frugal travelers doing it on the cheap. See what they think of the various accommodations and transportation options, read their comments on the artistic and cultural attractions, get an idea of what kind of local food is cheaply available. It's not quite like being there, but it will be a lot of stuff that you can identify with --- it's great armchair travel. Travel agents make their money off big-ticket travelers, and know absolutely nothing about the kinds of things that are in those two guidebooks.
One final note of advice that I always give to first time budget travelers. Pack everything you think you will need, and then pick it all up and walk around the block with it. Then ask yourself how much of that you will REALLY need. In a lot of places, you'll find that a taxi from the bus station to a hotel and back will cost more than the hotel, so you can cut your costs in half if you can tote your own stuff a few blocks.

What a great idea, and so practical.
I'll tell the neighbors that I'm running away from home.
