morlan1 is on a distinguished road
Default Washington (seattle area) to Kentucky in December

We are attempting this loooong road trip in early to mid December, with 2 kids in tow Should we take the suggested route by google maps or mapquest, or modify and go a little further south because of potential weather/snow issues?

Anyone ever make this trip (generally, west to east coast)?

1.) Get a road atlas
2.) Watch the weather channel a day or 2 before your trip. Pay attention to the mountain passes and the high plains.

No big deal, hardly enough to worry about, particularly in early December. And yes, thousands of truckers (and tens of thousands of personal cars) make that route or drive from the northwest to the mid-south every day of the year, snow or no snow.

My dispatcher would tell you that it can't be THAT long; after all, it's only a few inches on his U.S.A. fold-out map... (Sorry, couldn't resist. Dd714 said it all in a nutshell, though)

Sheesh Crew Chief one of these days

Contrary to what Dd714 said it can be a big deal if you don't have winter driving skills. The plains, albeit don't always accumulate much snow can be bad if it's snowing and there are high winds. You certainly won't be geting there without hitting at least one mountain range. It totally depends on what your schedule is like along with your budget.

Basically if you wanted you could take the super long route going across the south and then climb up I-5, however you probably won't need to do that

As suggested, carry your atlas and keep your eyes on a good weather source. Hate to say it, but I've seen the Weather Channel get it wrong during current weather let alone forecasting. Myself, I prefer Weather Underground or Intellicast.

Have an enjoyable and safe trip!
