Default What would you consider an expensive hotel

How much in $/night for a standard basic room rate do you think would be clearly "expensive" in your opinion?
My opinion I would say truly expensive would be anything over $250/night.

I don't like to pay more than $150 per night, because I never spend time in my room when I take vacations. I hardly even turn on the tv. I get up, have coffee and get dressed, leave, return early-evening to change, then leave again. I might use the pool if I'm staying somewhere that has one.

It also depends on where the hotel is. Some cities will be more expensive than others. $200 in a smaller, less touristy place would be pretty nice compared to $200 in NYC, Chicago, Rome or Paris, etc.

I try to keep under $200 for the two of us but realize that may not be possible in some cities.

I don't like to spend more than $150 a night--and rarely do.
I look at $100 to $125 a night places first.
We do occasionally splurge. We also occasionally stay in hostels.
It just depends.

IMO- anything over 200.00 a night should be a very nice room, but as the OP stated, that would be an average hotel room in a city like NYC or SF(probably not in the city center), if you can get one for 200.00 a night!!

Wow, I've never paid more than $70 and usually stay cheaper.
Even in Europe.

I'm really cheap, though.

I camp when I travel and/or stay with friends wherever possible.

Clearly depends on the city. When we go to Manhattan we plan on spending plenty. If we plan on more sight seeing adventures and we'll be spending less time in the room, $150 is plenty enough for it to be nice and clean and in a decent section of town.
The most we have spent, $ 540 per night but it's an all inclusive. Sandals, St. Lucia Grande. Very nice and have done it numerous years for at least a week to 10 days. We highly recommend Sandals resorts.

Some cities have alternatives that will give weekly and even monthly rates, which save big. This is obtainable in San Francisco and Palm Springs. However, it's impossible to find in New York, difficult in New Orleans, too (but not as bad).

I did just stay at a place in NY for $99 per night, but it was shared baths, something that Americans have trouble with. It wasn't perfect, but the place grew on me as I stayed there, and I'll probably return to it when I go back in two years. It was clean and in a very convenient location.

My jaw did drop a lot at the rates to most of NY's lodgings. Just to sleep and shower? Jeez!

I think it depends where you are! In Vegas, you'll pay $300+ for a nice hotel on weekends, but can get the same room for $89 on weeknights! The room didn't change!!!

Depends where and when. New York at Christmas time is crazy! I usually stay at the Hilton on Ave of the America's or the Metropolitan on Lex. In the summer I would pay between $200-300 per night, at Christmas double that. Searching hotels.com I see most in Mahattan for anytime during Decemeber are about $500 a night. I guess they will charge that if they can get it. Won't stop me from going at Christmas.
