Hey everyone,
My boyfriend and I are driving from IA to Central CA thanksgiving weekend. We're really excited! =) But i've been getting a bit nervous about the drive.. any route suggestions? Do you think 80 will be alright? Since we aren't pinched for time I wouldn't be against taking a safer southern route Just in case!
And I'm from cali so NO winter driving experience.. eek, though he has driven in the snow many times, but not in the mountains.. lol
There are couple posts on driving across country with really good tips. If you have lots of time, I think you would be better going south to hwy 10 or even 40. You will find some areas with snow, but not like up north on 80. Also check Welcome to Interstate-Guide.com! for highway information. Make sure you have side road assistance with your insurance or AAA. Check your car and tires before you leave and have your cell phones charged. I did this drive once before 10 years ago and doing it the opposite direction end of December. Good luck with your trip.
So far things should be alright. My sister lives in the Central Valley in CA and she keeps me updated on the changes in their weather as it tends to hit us right after and travels the same path.
That is speaking of Donner's Pass not Wyoming who has already had some winter storms.
Do check out the other threads mentioned as there is some great advice.
Why not take I35 down to I40 in Oklahoma then take the old Route 66 trip? Probably better weather than on i70 or i80.
This is probably the best suggestion. I've driven route I-40 from Calif and I-35 or I-29 up to to Iowa and it's freeway all the way and the weather/roads have always been good.
Granted there are scenic routes further north, but the weather plays into that factor, plus it takes a little longer.
I'd take I-80. Just keep an eye on the weather and take your time. If it gets too bad, sit it out for a day. Most times you won't have a problem.
