Hit by extreme weather and operational glitches, U.S. airlines canceled nearly 9,000 flights, disrupting more than 1 million passengers' plans in the first half of the holiday travel period, according to a report Monday.

The number of cancellations from Friday, Dec. 19, through Sunday jumped 70% from last year, says FlightStats, a Portland, Ore., firm.

that's why I cancelled my trip this Christmas. I saw the weather going across the US and said, "self...stay in sunny warm Texas". I cancelled first, before the airlines got me. Stayed home and was happy, cept for decorating. I hate putting Christmas lights on palm trees...they just don't hold.

Smart idea! We don't travel during the holidays. You don't get those little palm tree clamps for your lights?
